The UN Day 2011 celebration will include a program featuring:

Actors Bridge Ensemble: Act Like a GRRRL
  • Country music star Marlee Scott, performing her latest hit, “Beautiful Maybe”
  • International dessert and coffee bar

The Girl Up campaign was established by the United Nations Foundation to address the needs of adolescent girls in developing countries. It mobilizes American girls to raise awareness and funds for programs of the United Nations that help some of the world’s hardest-to-reach adolescent girls. Through Girl Up’s support, girls have the opportunity to become educated, healthy, safe, counted, and positioned to be the next generation of leaders.

Did you know?

  • Less than half a cent of every development dollar goes to programs for girls, particularly those ages 10-14.
  • Girls make up more than half of the 143 million out-of-school children and youth.
  • Medical complications from pregnancy are the leading cause of death among girls ages 15-19 worldwide.
  • One in seven girls in the developing world marries before the age of 15.
  • Girls spend up to 15 hours each day obtaining water for their families and villages.

But…this isn’t just a girl issue. When you support adolescent girls, Everyone Benefits!

Girl Up was recently featured on PBS’s News Hour. To learn more about the Girl Up campaign, visit. www.girlup.org.
